Grading
How do I earn an A, B, etc?
Your grade reflects how well you achieve the goals of the course. Each unit will focus on a limited number of goals. Lab work will focus on skills that cut across the course, such as collecting data, graphing, data analysis, etc.
Your overall grade will be determined by assignments in the following categories: Labs, Tests, Common Formative Assessments, Student Ownership Skills, and a Final Exam.
How will my grade be calculated?
Your grade in the course will depend primarily on the results of Tests and Labs. There are also three other assignment categories. These five categories will be weighted as follows:
Tests: Most units will end with a Test. Prior to this test, you will have the opportunity to assess your progress by formative assessments (quizzes) and independent practice.
Labs: The grades for labs will focus on skills that cut across the course: data collection, graphing, data analysis, communication, etc. You will be expected to improve on these skills as the course progresses.
Student Ownership Skills: This category includes smaller daily assignments, such as Ignites, problem-solving practice, and reading assignments. These assignments will usually be graded for effort, completion, and timeliness.
SCROLL DOWN
Regarding effort: Dare to try! When you try new things, it is natural to make mistakes and learn from them. NOTE: Copying the work of a classmate,
even if modified, is not appropriate effort.
Will I be able to retake assessments
or redo labs?
Sometimes everyone has a bad day or is not as prepared as they want to be. You will be able to retake two tests during a semester. The expectations for retaking a test are as follows:
NOTE that a test retake will usually be a different version of the unit test.
In general, formative assessments (quizzes) may not be retaken.
For labs, if your work does not show the progress that I expect you to make, we may decide that it is in your best interest for you to redo the lab.
Assignments that do not meet minimum standards may be returned for rework and resubmission. If a returned assignment is not resubmitted, the assignment will receive a failing grade.
